On April 7, 1581, Prince William of Orange ordered the construction of a hexagonal defense structure around Dokkum, which was to protect the city against the enemy. This defense work consisted of six protruding defenses, a moat of 24 meters wide and more than five meters high ramparts. Despite the construction of these defenses, the city never had to withstand an attack. Nowadays, flour mill De Hoop from 1849 stands on the Zuiderbulwerk of the fortress walls.
