Kooldries-Hoofsweer is very diverse. You will find open water, shrubs, bushes, grassland and a piece of heath. The old clay pits are an eyewitness to the former brick factories. Today they are filled with water and covered with special plants. Birds, dragonflies and amphibians happily take over the old clay pits. And so definitely worth a visit! Hikers can discover the area via a number of marked hiking trails. These are adventurous hiking trails whose paths are not paved. It is therefore advisable to wear good walking shoes and boots in bad weather. Buggies and prams are difficult to handle in the area and are better left at home.

The Kooldries-Hoofsweer is only accessible to walkers. The Paepestraat, which separates the two areas, is accessible to cyclists, horse riders, etc. Walkers can discover the area via a number of marked out walking routes. The Kooldries-Hoofsweer is located next to the Dessel-Schoten canal. During the digging of this canal in the 19th century, thick layers of clay were noticed in the subsoil. The location right next to the canal was ideal for exporting the clay, which is how the numerous clay pits were created in the Kooldries-Hoofsweer. These pits fell into disrepair after the clay extraction, filled with rainwater and eventually replaced with willow thickets. Due to the underlying clay layer, the area is characterized as a very dynamic system of drying out and rewetting, which means that the Kooldries-Hoofsweer is home to a unique fauna and flora. Bird species such as little grebes, woodpeckers, nuthatches, orioles, tree falcons and kingfishers find refuge in the large clay pits.
