Monumental church, begun in 1472. Last work by Leon Battista Alberti and a major work of Renaissance architecture. Floor plan, elevation and façade depart from the classical basilica and are heavily inspired by ancient temple models. Innovative concept with a strong after-effect in the church building of the Baroque period.

Cycling
The basilica with the plan of a cross consists of a nave and two transepts. It served as a model and prototype for many later churches. In 1470, Leon Battista Alberti wrote to Margrave Ludovico II Gonzaga that the new church would have been a "larger, more eternal and worthy temple", the construction of which was entrusted to the Florentine Luca Fancelli (1430-1495) for the death of Alberti in 1472.
The work took three centuries without going too far from the original plan.
