In the "Mechernich Forest", which stretches from the eastern city limits of Mechernich to Satzvey, the Katzensteine rise up on the border to Veybachaue near Katzvey.
The striking rock formation made of red sandstone natural rock comes from a mighty river deposit that covered the entire Eifel about 220 million years ago.
Over the course of millions of years, uplift and subsidence processes in the earth's crust as well as rain, wind and frost have contributed to the current appearance. The resulting overhanging rock sections offered natural protection against adverse weather conditions.
