The fortified castle of the prince-bishops was destroyed in 1717 after the Treaty of Paris; from 1818 to 1823 the Dutch built the current fort on this site. The fort, which towers over the city, played an important role during the Second World War as a place of detention for more than 7,000 prisoners.

Below the complex there are three memorial stones for the five resistance fighters who were executed at this location in April 1944, for the forced laborers and for the prisoners and resistance fighters who died in the citadel.

Hiking

After the invasion of the German Wehrmacht in May 1940, the fort was used as a Gestapo prison and as a collection camp. Around 6,000 Belgians and 1,240 French were held here, primarily resistance fighters and opponents of the regime.
