Groppenheim was founded in 1185. The Bavarian original land register shows it in the 1810s as a street village, whose ten hearths were mostly built as stately four-sided farms. Until the 1970s, Groppenheim belonged to the community of Kondrau, which consisted of 18 villages. When Kondrau lost its independence with the Bavarian regional reform, Groppenheim was incorporated into the town of Waldsassen. In Groppenheim there is a small chapel and a village inn.
