In 1926 the Dortmunder Ritterbrauerei Aktiengesellschaft acquired the former bank building at Ostenhellweg 3 from the Darmstädter und Nationalbank (Berlin) in order to use it as the “Zum Ritter” restaurant. The building, which is now a listed building, was erected in 1905 by Walter Eck in historicizing forms and rebuilt in 1920 with Renaissance elements according to designs by Hugo Steinbach and Hans Strobel. The figurative bronze sculpture, a knight in full armor on a horse, was probably installed in 1926 as an advertising medium for the restaurant and the beer. Rider and horse are above the former shield, which is fastened east of the entrance at a certain height above the corner. Despite their small size of approx. 50 cm, both are fully sculpted and detailed. The well-fortified, heavily armored warrior with helmet and armor stands resolutely with bent knees in his stirrups. In his left hand he holds a short rein, in his right a shaft fastened to the bottom of his stirrup. Unfortunately, this one broke off at the top and may have been a lance. The helmet with the visor up shows only part of his face, but hints at a moustache, a straight nose and arched eyebrows. The naturalistic, muscular horse wears a saddle, a geometrically patterned saddle pad and decorated reins. The large industrial brewery was founded in 1889, but the brand name was not created until 1905. In 1994 it became part of the Dortmunder Union brewery, but there are still three different "Ritter Biere" that are marketed as traditional brands of the Ruhr area.
