The story of this church, which rises on a rock above the city of Kavala, began in 1928 when a wooden chapel in honor of the prophet Elias was built there on the initiative of some Christians. This simple and modest place of worship became a place of pilgrimage for the pilgrims from the area, who climbed up the hill to find contemplation and enjoy the wonderful view over the picturesque town and the bay of Kavala to the island of Thasos.
