The Walter Benjamin Gardens are located on Avenida de Josep Carner in the Sants-Montjuic district of Barcelona. They are named after the German philosopher and essayist Walter Benjamin (1892-1940), integrated into the thinking of the Frankfurt School. They were created in 1981 with a project by the architects Daniel Navas, Neus Solé and Imma Jansana within a plan to improve the accesses to the Montjuïc mountain and contribute to the continuity of the green from Atarazanas to its link with the 1929 Exhibition Gardens.

They are located in a border area of the urban fabric: the seafront and Montjuic mountain, a place where maritime transport and coal storage warehouses had proliferated since the late 1800s.

Today, it continues the backbone of Neoclassical Barcelona in the perspective that, from the Ciutadella Park, brings us closer to the Montjuic mountain. The action is part of the prolegomena of the stage "From the plan to the project" that Oriol Bohigas would define in his book «Reconstruction of Barcelona» where this space appears with the title of «Jardines de la Puerta de Montjuic» name that the authors of these gardens give it in reference to the old gate in the wall and which can still be seen today in the writing that accompanies some of the Montjuic stone blocks at the entrances to the garden.
