The castle has had various uses during its almost 800-year history. Until the 18th century it served as the residence and administrative center of the Mecklenburg dukes. During the 30 Years War, Wallenstein stayed in the castle for 3 days. The ironworks located in the city allowed him to produce iron military equipment.
With the completion of the nearby castle in 1717, the castle lost its character as a ruler's seat. The Duke's former living quarters became a stables and remained as part of the Redefin State Stud until 1954. The former farm building also had various uses, including serving as an orangery, living room, school, technical college and youth hostel. After extensive renovation of the entire castle complex, which was completed in 2006, the castle now houses the museum, a wedding room, the city information center and the restaurant. Guided tours and events accompany the year.
No other medieval castle in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is as well preserved.

The first parts of the castle were built on the initiative of Count von Schwerin in the middle of the 13th century on a natural Elde dune. During excavations no connection could be found to a use by former Slavic settlers. The first written mention of the structure dates from the year 1331. Purpose of the castle was the military protection of the south and southeastern border of the county Schwerin. Border disputes and clashing secular and ecclesiastical interests between the county, the county Dannenberg and the dioceses Havelberg and Ratzeburg were the order of the day, which were partly carried out in armed assaults.
Since 1358, the Old Castle, which has been rebuilt and expanded several times in the centuries served as a bailiwick, until the 18th century as a side residence of the Duke of Mecklenburg. In 1882, the Neustadt technical center was founded at the castle, until 1920 it was taught in the walls. Until 1954, the "New House" serves as the stallion depot of the Stud Redefin. In GDR times there was a youth hostel and apartments in the castle. From 1994 to 1998, rehabilitation work was carried out in which excavations could provide further information on the origin and construction stages.

A museum gives insights into the history of the castle today.
