A breeding program in the 1950s saved the species from extinction.
With 12 Przewalsi horses that had survived in zoos and animal parks, a breeding program was launched in the late 1950s. It focused on stabilizing these remaining animals and building a healthy population to ensure the survival of the species.
Coordination of breeding efforts was improved with the establishment of a stud book in 1959. It is maintained by the Prague Zoo, and the EEP stud book is maintained by the Cologne Zoo.
Here, near the Königsbrunn Heath, there were once five young stallions; currently, in 2025, there are only three. One had to be euthanized because he was severely injured by a rival. Another was placed in another herd as part of the breeding program.
