The Erftluftkanal in its present form was built in the mid-19th century.

The Erftflutkanal was built around 1860 in the course of the so-called "Melioration der Erft". This "meloriation" is a soil improvement - here by lowering the groundwater level, which had been raised artificially by the many mills. This increase, however, led to the drowning of the Erftauen.
The Erft flood channel provided for a regulation of the groundwater level.
