It formed the eastern entrance to the city through the city fortifications, which consisted of a moat and earthen ramparts raised on the city side. Its earliest mention by name dates back to 1312.
The Mühlenpaot community has erected the gate sculpture built by the Lüdinghausen metal design manufacturer Jürgen Polenz. This was made possible with the support of the Volksbank Lüdinghausen-Olfen eG.
