On March 28, 1945, at about 4 p.m., a US P47 Thunderbolt R26 fighter-bomber crashed at the northern end of the Maximus Nord pit. At this point, the muddy water was 5 m deep. Although the aircraft touched down with its wings and the cockpit protruded out of the water, the pilot died. It was Thomas Frederic Layton, 2nd Lieutenant, born on September 14, 1922, a geology student from Dallas/Texas of all people. For a short time he was buried in the Lardenbach cemetery.
