Due to the very slow pushing up of mountains such as the Ardennes and the Eifel, tensions arose that caused cracks and fragmentation in the gently sloping earth crust.
The best-known fault is De Peelrand fault east of the Asten-Deurne-Milheeze-Erp line. When this landscape was formed, the area of what is now Brabant was still below sea level. About two million years ago, in the late Tiglian, this area was covered with silt from the Rhine River. The last ice age and the subsequent period modeled the Brabant landscape as we know it today over this primeval landscape.

The Peelrand fault near Uden is one of the most recognizable fault zones in Brabant and cuts across the landscape between the Bedafse Bergen and the Annabos. This geological fault causes a height difference of several meters, but more importantly, a difference in water management that is immediately visible in the terrain. On the higher side of the fault, mineral-rich groundwater rises, making this higher part wetter than the lower-lying zone adjacent to it. This inverse pattern of wet and dry is both indicative and unique to this area.
