The village of Samos (province of Lugo in Galicia, Spain) is located in a valley leading into the mountains of Pedrafita. It is on the Way of St. James to Compostela, 11 kilometers from Sarria and 32 kilometers from the Cebreiro Pass. The average altitude is over 700 m.
Its main complex is an abbey, the Real Abadía de Samos, and the Benedictine monastery of San Xulián de Samos, one of the most important religious centers in Spain, which is dated to the sixth century and presents many different architectural styles.
The pilgrims of the Camino in Santiago, passing through Samos, usually visit the abbey and the monastery and use freely the "refugio" (accommodation) at the Benedictine abbey of San Xulián.
