The Iron Man of Lommel (the Geodetic Station) is a very heavy two-part cast iron construction. The lower part, which is very firmly anchored in the ground, bears the cast-in inscription STATION GEODESIQUE. The upper part stands like a bell jar on the lower part, and contains some marks for surveying. When the bell jar was removed from the base, the surveyors were given a nice, stable and sturdy flat surface, necessary to set up the precision equipment to take their accurate measurements.
