The secret of the Hüppen baking art has been guarded and passed on for generations in Gottlieben. Queen Hortense Bonaparte enjoyed so-called “Gaufrettes” from Gottlieben when she lived at the nearby Arenenberg Castle from 1817 to 1837. Her famous son, the future Emperor of France Napoleon III, also became an enthusiastic fan of the delicate Gottlieber specialty.
