Best Hikes to Norderney Cape

Tips

  • The cape is Norderney's landmark. It is a 13 meter high beacon halfway to the Nordhelm settlement. As early as 1848, the first wooden scaffolding in the form of a pyramid was erected high up on a dune as a symbol for shipping. In 1870 it was replaced by a brick building and in 1930 it was rebuilt as a stone building. In the years 1848 to 1874 a fire burned on the substructure, which served to recognize the island at night. At that time, Norderney was hardly built on and there were no tall trees or plants so that the fire could be seen from the sea. It's different today. A wooded area and tall buildings ensure that the cape, which is comparatively less high, is hardly visible any more. Since 1928, however, the cape has gained new honors as a symbol on the silver coat of arms as a symbol of the island.
