The interaction between ebb and flow in the Zwin creates an exceptional biotope within Europe, a tidal area consisting of mudflats and salt marshes. Only highly specialized plants, such as samphire and sea lavender, survive in this unique saltwater biotope. The mudflats are a rich and varied source of food for thousands of birds. It is not without reason that the Zwin is described as an international airport for foreign birds! They are present in large numbers all year round to breed, overwinter or to look for food.
