The Retranchementse mill is a grist and peeling mill. The standard mill dates from 1818. Before that, there was also a mill on the same site. It was built in 1643, but was blown over. The current mill was therefore rebuilt using old parts.

In 1944 the mill had a hard time and suffered heavy war damage during Canadian bombings. Complete restoration was completed in 1982 - 1983.

The mill can be visited on Wednesdays and Saturdays during the summer months, otherwise by appointment.

Next to the mill is a small building (the 'Molen Information Center') where you will find a lot of information about the history of the mill and the rest of the heritage (and history) of Retranchement. You will also be informed about mills in the region and will find some items from the miller's world during opening hours.

A unique feature of this mill: one of the very few mills with a wooden hoop catch. The catch in this mill is also the only historical one; those of Zuidzande and Hulst are reconstructions, according to molendatabase.nl/molens/ten-bruggencate-nr-01673

The other facts on an information board of the ANWB in front of the mill (see photos): "Open post mill. Built in 1643 and rebuilt in 1818 using old parts. Heavy war damage in 1944 after which restoration in 1948. Complete restoration in 1982-83. Flight 20.7 meters, 2 lofts. Equipment: 1 pair of millstones and equipment for hoisting sacks, the hoist. Regularly in operation. Municipal property." And for those who want even more, there is also a large board with a map of the open mills in the Zwin region (both in the Netherlands and Belgium) with important events in the life of this mill next to it and below the opening hours, the name of the miller, the address details and the website molenszwinstreek.eu for those who really love mills (and that is not the same as having a stroke of the mill).
