In 1884 the S-shaped Oker arm was diverted and the river bed was filled.
The current library building was built in the Neo Renaissance style as early as 1881-1886.
From 1779 to 1781, the Lessinghaus in front of it was the residence of the court librarian Gotthold Ephraim, who wrote the famous drama >> Nathan the Wise << here after the death of his wife.
