The ruins of an old smelting works in the Seelbach valley. Silver and ores from nearby mines were once processed here. You suddenly feel like you've been transported back to an earlier time. A great adventure for children too!

18th century. Silver and ores from nearby mines. Ruins of smelting hut

Smelting works called Buckerig. It was still in operation until around 1800, belonged to the then mayor of Montabaur, Löhr, and was said to be able to smelt twice a year. Two hundredweights of coal were needed to smelt one hundredweight of ore. There was no hard coal here at the time, so you can imagine the enormous quantities of charcoal that were needed at that time. The numerous circular, leveled areas in the forests where charcoal kilns once burned still bear witness to this today.

In addition to ores from the Hübinger Silberstollen and the Windener "Silwuch", ores from the mine in the Gackenbacher Goss (see below) were processed here, the spoil heap of which can still be seen between the two ponds in the big game reserve.
