        Alfhausen-Rieste flood retention basin

With a storage capacity of up to 20.8 million cubic meters, the Alfhausen-Rieste flood retention basin between Bramsche and Bersenbrück is the second largest such facility in Lower Saxony. The structure, built between 1970 and 1996, absorbs a large portion of the Hase flood water via a feeder when required and releases its contents back into the Hase in measured amounts via the drain after the flood event has passed.

Before the basin was put into operation, the Hase overflowed its banks here during small to medium floods and flooded large valley areas as far as the Cloppenburg area - including many populated areas.

The facility consists of a main basin and a reserve basin, which is used as soon as the storage capacity of the main basin, the so-called "Alfsee", is exhausted.

Even if the reserve basin is full during major floods (e.g. a 25-year flood), the remaining flood water must be channelled through or partly discharged via the Tiefe Hase in the Hase valley floodplain.
