The lime caves were used for the mining of lime, which took place underground. It is documented that the extracted lime was used to repair the Chemnitz city wall. But it is also said to have served to build the Augustusburg hunting and pleasure palace. It is possible that the commissioning of the railway lines in 1866, 1869 and 1875 and the associated import of cheap lime from Bohemia and Silesia made it unprofitable and therefore stopped mining. What is certain is that limestone mining stopped before 1905.
