      "CARBONIUM (358 - 296 MILLION YEARS AGO)

The Carboniferous is the geological era of hard coal formation, which, however, only began in the course of the Upper Carboniferous. Marine deposits from before that can be found at some locations. The Carboniferous layers, like the Devonian ones before them, were folded after their deposition and sometimes show impressive structures.

FROM EMPTY SEAM TO UPPER CARBON WITH SEAM

With the beginning of the Upper Carboniferous, the situation changes due to the mountain folding front gradually advancing from the south. Sediment is now entering the sea basin from the south, with purely clayey material initially being deposited further away from the coast, then silt and sand also being deposited closer to the coast. This deeper section of the Upper Carboniferous was still completely deposited in the sea and is referred to as the "Seamless Upper Carboniferous". With the northward migration of the coastline, large river deltas lead to considerable sand deposits, which finally reach up to sea level (Kaisberg Formation). The first forest bogs can develop on these delta platforms, the remains of which today form the oldest hard coal seams in the Ruhr Basin. In addition to peat moss and ferns, tree-sized horsetail and club moss plants predominate. Large insects (dragonflies) buzz through the air and on land the first amphibians leave their footprints in the mud. Fish and mussels live in the waters."
