The riverside path on the Schaalsee is beautiful with all the boathouses and the great nature.

The biosphere reserve ensures the protection of the species-rich nature as well as sustainable use by the population and visitors. Around 70 percent of the area is arable or grassland, 18 percent forest. 150 kilometers of signposted cycling and hiking trails run through the hilly landscape with a mixture of wet meadows, fields and forests. Day trippers can observe the diverse animal world at numerous vantage points. Cranes and white-tailed eagles breed in the lake landscape, and thousands of migratory birds rest there in autumn. In the information center of the biosphere reserve, the Pahlhuus in Zarrentin, visitors can find out more about the change in the landscape from the Ice Age to the present day. Admission is free. In addition, several signposted hiking trails start at the Pahlhuus. From April to November, the Biosphere Schaalsee market takes place there on the first Sunday of every month, where regional suppliers sell organic food and handicrafts. A small cultural program complements the offer. Day trippers can swim and relax at designated bathing spots in Seedorf on the western shore of the lake. Those who would like to explore the area from the water can rent rowing, pedal or sailing boats or take a tour on a passenger ship from Zarrentin. You are not allowed to bring your own boats, since every watercraft requires a permit. The bathing possibilities are also limited with regard to nature. Swimming is only allowed at the numerous designated spots. The Schaalsee, 14 kilometers long and at more than 70 meters the deepest lake in northern Germany, is considered to be very clean and rich in oxygen. The good water quality ensures that dozens of fish species live there. Dense reeds sometimes grow on the banks, but also alders and beeches. The numerous bays and peninsulas were formed when the lake was formed during the past Ice Age. Today, concerts and exhibitions take place in the former nunnery in Zarrentin.
