    The name Doddendael dates back to 1379. Between 1580 and 1590, Doddendael played a role in the first phase of the Eighty Years' War. In 1591, the castle was set on fire by Prince Moritz. The main building was rebuilt several times between 1656 and 1662. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle's cellar was used for Roman Catholic services.

    The castle fell into disrepair until the 19th century. Many restorations followed. Today, the castle consists of a rectangular main building with an extension and a tower at the front. In the 15th century, a wall was built and the moat between the house and the wall was filled in.

    Doddendael Castle is located near the Waal, northeast of the village of Ewijk, ten kilometers west of Nijmegen. There are several theories about the name Doddendael. The most flowery explanation, however, is that the house owes its name to the cattails that grew abundantly in the swamp area.
