Hiking Highlight
Due to its seclusion in the shadow of the former inner-German border, which today forms the Green Belt, the Cheiner peat bog has largely been spared from profound drainage. Fed by numerous sources, a colorful mosaic of species-rich wet meadows, moor and swamp forests has been preserved here. We recommend a visit in spring. Then the concert of moor, tree and grass frogs fills the air. In May and June the moor is colorful with the flowering of over 6,000 orchids, e.g. the rare broad-leaved orchid. A plank walkway is built especially at this time. You can use this to enter the magnificent wet meadow without damaging the sensitive vegetation cover and the bog soils.
