In the 16th century, the four crafts of Geervliet, Biert, Simonshaven and Spijkenisseom decided to jointly dig a water storage place and drainage channel from Het Austria (a large water in the middle of the polder): the Vierambachtenboezem. Since 1566, water mills have been pumping the polder water via the Vierambachtenboezem to Spijkenisse.
