Outside is the church fountain, also known as the seven-jet fountain.

The Kilian Church is beautifully illuminated in the dark. The church tower can be seen from far away and is a beautiful photo opportunity.

        The first mention

When the Diocese of Würzburg was founded in 741, the new bishop in the East Frankish region received 24 churches with all parish rights and income. This included a "basilica" in "villa Helibrunna". This church was a royal church until then, dedicated to the then popular Archangel Michael, who was worshiped since the 5th century, especially on mountain sanctuaries. This is documented by a dated 741 donation. This document is of historical importance insofar as it proves that there was a royal court and a church in Heilbronn in 741. This Heilbronner Michaelsbasilika was built in the time of the Franks near the name of the city fountain and was 889 again mentioned in a document.

        The Romanesque church around 1100

Around 1100 there were two churches in Heilbronn. It is believed that the Michaels Basilica of 741 stood on the site of today's Kilianskirche. Even if there are some reasons for this, this assumption could not be proven until today. However, the fact that there was already a sacral structure in this place before or around 1100 is considered to be secured by excavations from 1880. This Romanesque early church was about 10 by 11 meters and had an apse to the east.

The early Gothic church around 1280

In 1280, instead of the small Romanesque church, there was a much larger early Gothic church whose exact construction time is unknown. This church had a basilica form with low side aisles, a short, single-aisled choir and two side choir towers. In the 13th century, the church was consecrated at the instigation of the diocese of St. Kilian, who had worked in Würzburg. As Kilianskirche the building was first mentioned in 1297 in a letter of indulgence.
