The dream beach Barley Cove is located between two headlands on the Mizen Peninsula in West Cork. The beach is ideal for a trip with the whole family. It impresses with an extensive dune system and a wild and beautiful landscape. This beautiful beach, which is just as suitable for long walks as it is for great beach days with bathing fun, is designated as a special protected area under the European Habitats Directive.

Apparently the dunes were created by a tsunami caused by the Lisbon earthquake in 1755. Lisbon was almost completely destroyed at that time. It is astonishing that there have been floods here in Ireland with waves more than 4m high.

The dream beach is on the way to Mizen Head. The beach is reached via a boardwalk through the salt marsh, then via a pontoon bridge that crosses a tidal stream. The dunes there are very beautiful and a notice board states that they were built up by a tsunami that followed the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.
