The old elevated road is an ideal walking and cycling route. It runs almost to Ilmenau. You pass the television tower, which can be seen from afar, and the hunter's board. Depending on local knowledge, there are numerous jumping-off possibilities to explore places outside the forest such as Burgwindheim with its blood chapel or Ebrach with its treetop path. These tours are more advisable by bike due to the distance. For hikers there are always circular trails that branch off on the elevated road and lead back there. Komoot is a great planner for this. The starting point is the hiking car park on the side between Thüngbach and Obermelsendorf
