Podere Casanuova is a small village that became famous as one of the highlights of the Strade Bianche. It is the end of the gravel section of San Martino in Graina. The spring classic Strade Bianche has been bringing professionals up to the hill via San Martino in Graina since 2016. The hill is in the middle of the Crete Senesi, the landscape south of Siena. The barren hilly landscape is characterized by little vegetation and small mountains. The terrain is marked by furrows that alternate with biancane (high white hills with no vegetation). The cypress and pine-lined paths that serve as wind protection are also typical of the landscape.
In 2015, the segment found its way into the racing circuit for the first time in the women's race on the Strade Bianche, and the men followed suit in 2016 because it is the perfect introduction to the key part of the Monte Sante Marie race. The highest point of San Martino in Grania is at the Biv.S.Martino bus stop. at the junction with the SP 438.
