About 500 meters from the pretty village of Rasiglia stands this beautiful sanctuary which dates back to the 15th century (1450) and was commissioned by the Foligno bishop Bolognini after the discovery of a statue of the Madonna.

The church has a single nave and a quadrangular plan, it has actually undergone several alterations, as in the case of the main altar, but it also preserves valuable 15th century frescoes with sacred and biblical themes and, among these, the oldest dates back to 1454, and represents the Madonna della Misericordia.

"Mary is really our sister, as Saint Ambrose says. She lived a life very similar to ours. It is of course beautiful to venerate Mary as the Virgin and Mother of God, as the one conceived immaculately by original sin and assumed into heaven; but she is also the Madonna of plates, brooms and cooking pots..." With the motif of the broom, Albino Luciani (Pope John Paul I) may be taking up a thought of his predecessor in the office of Bishop of Rome, Giuseppe Roncalli (Pope John XXIII), who is said to have said: "One can become holy with a shepherd's staff in one's hand, but just as one can become holy with a broom."
