Trevi is dominated by two mountains of the Umbria-Marche Apennines: Monte Brunette (1422 m) and Monte Serano (1429 m). Geologically they consist of mostly calcareous sedimentary rocks of marine origin; the oldest date back to 180 million years ago, lithostratigraphic unit of the "Corniola". The "Rosso Ammonitico" has been studied in the field of paleontology; this unit is moreover well known in the Umbria-Marche area; it emerges widely near the town of Pettino up to the northern slopes of Mount Brunette. Gave the type specimen of Praerycites. Among the many specimens of ammonites occasionally found along road cuts and small streams, a large specimen of Rarenodia planulata is worthy of note. Its diameter is over 40 cm and has been figured in this entry.
