  • Anyone traveling along the Gurkenradweg (Gherkin Cycle Path) between Lübbenau and Lübben will not only be served a pinch of Spreewald idyll, but a whole menu of nature, water, meadows, and bridges. The route leads right through the biosphere reserve, over narrow wooden walkways, past reed beds, old locks, and, time and again, small waterways that wind through the flat land.A real highlight is the so-called Adventure Bridge over the Nordumfluter (Northern Floodplain). It sounds like action, but it's more of a friendly wink from the cartographers. The bridge is narrow, slightly arched, and, with its wooden beams, gives a rustic, solid impression. If you're carrying panniers on your bike, it's best to ride with some caution – it gets tight. But that's precisely what makes this section so charming.Immediately afterward, the route continues through open meadows, where the view expands and, with a tailwind, you can cover quite a distance. Particularly beautiful: the forest section north of Lübbenau, which provides pleasant shade in midsummer – ideal for a quick drink break or simply taking a breather. The paths are paved and mostly easy to ride, although some sections can get a bit slippery in heavy rain. In return, you'll be rewarded with a true Spreewald atmosphere: dragonflies buzz over the water, herons stand in the reeds, and you can occasionally hear the quiet rattling of a boat on a parallel river.Tip: If you start in Lübbenau, the nearby harbor, various snack bars, and ice cream stands are the perfect opportunity for a little culinary prelude – pickles included.Video of the Gurkenradweg (Cucumber Cycle Path) between Lübben and Cottbus:Virtual Cycling in Germany | Spreewald | Gurkenradweg (Cucumber Cycle Path)
