The strange building, which can only be seen directly on the banks of the Moselle, is a low viaduct that raises the former railway line with short and long arches, which is now part of the residents' gardens. The hiking and cycling trail leads in front of the viaduct to the town center.
The residents actually wanted a route on the mountain behind the houses, but that would have cost more. To compensate, Zell had a somewhat more "representative" train station (today a pub) and the Collis Tower as a replacement for a previously burnt down shelter.
The purpose of such a low viaduct instead of a dam is not clear, but the Moselle was only canalised in the years 1958 to 1964 and equipped with barrages, so that the level at that time may have been significantly lower. On historical pictures from around 1900 you can see that the arches were originally much higher and offered passages to the houses.
