The history of the lake of S.Luce is recent and its artificial origin. Where today we admire a humid area of high naturalistic interest, in the past there were cereal crops owned by Monte dei Paschi di Siena, later purchased by the Company Solvay Italia S.p.a. for the construction of an industrial basin. The lake, in fact, was built between 1958 and 1960 by the Solvay Company, in order to obtain a fresh water reserve to be used in the chemical processing of the nearby Rosignano Solvay plant.
