The village of Ostedt is first mentioned in writing in 1032, but the settlement has been around much earlier. Finds from the time before the birth of Christ (iron slag and large boulders) prove the early settlement of this area. And for a long time there are also Christians in the area of the old Lehmker parish (late 8th century).
In 1377 a field stone chapel was built in Ostedt and consecrated on the 4th of February 1378 by Erich von Winsen, Auxiliary Bishop of Verden, to the honor of John the Baptist. Since then, the fair has been celebrated every year on 29th August (the day of the beheading of John the Baptist) for 620 years, from about 1800 onwards as Thanksgiving.
At the end of the 11th century the chapel was too small for the Ostedtern and it was demolished in 1908 (unfortunately!). The altar contained ancient documents and relics of Saint Gereon.
On October 10, 1909, the neo-Gothic church was consecrated. - At the inauguration, the German Empress and Queen of Prussia gave the church a precious altar book.
The large bell donated by the pastor and parishioners had to be delivered on 3 August 1942 for war purposes.
In 1959 a new bell was installed in the tower of the Ostedter church. Together with a smaller bell from 1920 she calls today for worship.
On Ascension Day every year is a festival service on the sports field of Ostedt. And every year - whether on Sundays or everyday life - on the day of John the Baptist, that is on 29 August, celebrated in the East of the harvest harvest festival.
