Beautiful isolated cave carved into the coast of Physgill Glen. The cave is thought to have been a hideaway for Saint Ninian, Scotland's first saint.

The beach is full of large smooth pebbles so not an easy walk if you have mobility issues. Very shoogley underfoot. Also the cave, while having important historic significance, isn’t deep. It’s only a few feet deep. If you’re expecting a cave to explore it won’t be worth the walk.

It's a beautiful foresty glen walk to St Ninian's Cave that is a cave in Physgill Glen in Dumfries and Galloway. The excavations in the 1880s - 1950 uncovered a number of medieval carved stones that are in Whithorn Priory and Museum. You'll leave the car at the car park for £1 and walk down the glen to the beach. There's a path that can be muddy and a rocky beach so steady footwear is recommended. We've also explored another cave just behind the St Ninian's Cave but that's reachable only at a very low tide and included some parts in the water and steep rock climbing.
