About Derek Christie 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Walks and easy hikes with my wife and son. Blair has a severe learning disability but loves to get out there and ramble. Our adventures around the country. I also recently got back into cycling so hoping to explore Scotland on the bike. More locally at first then further afield.

Loved yesterday’ walk at Allean Forest on the edge of Loch Tummel. It’s a short walk of around 4km following the red post markers through this beautiful setting. Walk Highlands sorts us out again with a brilliant easy “one boot” walk. They grade them in difficulty from 🥾 to 🥾🥾🥾🥾🥾 depending on terrain, accent and distance. We used to do 1-2 with a couple of 3’s but recently sticking to the 1 boot routes for now.

In the past we’ve always pretty much looked for known walks with either Walkhighlands or AA walks via OSMaps etc as we’re still quite new to rambling and hiking. Today as a smaller experiment I thought I’d just ask Komoot for a route from point A to point B to see where it would take us. Super impressed!! Kept us to paths and trials. This isn’t news to experienced Komoot users but this little walk may have opened the door to create our own little treks instead of just relying on previously done routes.

A nice easy trail walk. The route starts off along a wide gravel path before turning right and into open farmland. There were no cows when we were there but judging by the amount of cow pats it looks like a regular haunt of the coo army. Then it’s through a gate and the path narrows to a very overgrown trail. It’s easy enough but if tackling in the summer, maybe leave the shorts at home. There’s a lovely spot by the loch for a snack and to take a few minutes to chill. All in all a decent easy walk and fine for all abilities.

After leaving Portpatrick we wanted to give the dogs a good run so headed to Loch Ryan. It's a nice flat walk along the shoreline of Loch Ryan. You can see the ferries that head daily to Ireland from here.

Back at Portpatrick for the first time in a couple of years. This was one of your favourite stops last time for Blair as the walk to Dunskey Castle is really easy and pretty short at just over 2km. There's a lot of steps at the start but these are well spaced out and easy to navigate. This was the first of two walks today as we headed to Loch Ryan in the afternoon.
