Already in the 7th century or earlier built three-nave cathedral. It was built in the 12th to 14th century, a Romanesque basilica, which was donated according to legend by Richard the Lion Heart in gratitude for his rescue in 1192 off the island of Lokrum.

When the British King Richard the Lionheart ended his crusades and made his way home, his ship was struck in 1129 off the island of Lokrum by a strong storm. The ship capsized, Lionheart feared for his life and was rescued at the last minute by the inhabitants of Dubrovnik. Out of gratitude, he donated to the city a large sum of money, which was invested in the construction of the first cathedral. However, the Velika Gospa had to be rebuilt after the 1667 earthquake. In accordance with the taste of the time, the decision was made in 1673 for a simple, generous Baroque building. By 1713, the builders needed each stone to stand on top of the other, aligning the altars and benches, and finding all the paintings - such as Titian's "Assumption".
