In 1660, Sarajevo had 300 public fountains, down from 156 by the end of Ottoman rule. Almost all of them were donated by wealthy citizens and mostly made of stone with decorations and an inscription. currently there are only a handful of public fountains left in Sarajevo. The best known and meanwhile the symbol of Sarajevo is the Sebilj.
