In 1743, the Steingaden abbot Hyazinth Gaßner commissioned Dominikus Zimmermann to design a pilgrimage church on the Wies. As early as 1740, the abbot had discussed plans with Zimmermann for the redesign of the abbey church in Steingaden - and from 1727 to 1732 the Landsberg city master builder had created the Steinhausen pilgrimage church as a genuine rococo building for the Premonstratensian abbey of Schussenried. Unfortunately, Abbot Hyazinth was only able to see the beginning of the construction work - he died on March 28, 1745 at the age of 52, but his successor Abbot Marian II Mayr took over the plans and implemented the work. In the first year (1745) the building of the pilgrimage priest's house already grew 40 feet in height with a U-shaped floor plan, with the prelate's floor in the south and the pilgrimage hospice in the north containing a small courtyard open to the east.

The official laying of the foundation stone on behalf of the Bavarian Elector Max Josef III. However, this only took place later on July 10, 1746. In order to achieve this belated legalization of the building, Abbot Marian Mayr had assailed the elector with urgent words, who, however, was very critical of the request overall. That is why the regent did not want to lay the foundation stone himself, but commissioned Probst Herkulan Kahn from Diessen with the task.

There are many wayside crosses around the Wieskirche. One can imagine how deeply rooted the faith is in the population here.
