What is less well known is that not far from Potsdamer Platz, on Niederkirchnerstrasse, on the grounds of the "Topography of Terror" documentation center, there is still a 200-meter-long original section of the Berlin Wall. Until 1989, it marked the border between the districts of Mitte (East Berlin) and Kreuzberg (West Berlin).

    ---

The street was built in the 1870s as a private road under the working title of Verlängerte Zimmerstrasse. This was mainly done on the northern edge of the park to the Prinz-Albrecht-Palais. In 1891, it was officially named after the former owner of the city palace. After 1933, Prinz-Albrecht-Strasse became the control center of the Nazi state, which was characterized by its immediate proximity to the government district on Wilhelmstrasse. The entire street area, including the sidewalks, belongs to the Mitte district. This is why the Berlin Wall ran here from 1961 to 1990. This was – as was generally the case – built about one and a half meters back on the East Berlin side so that the GDR border troops could carry out construction and renovation work on their own territory.

Behind the piece of the Berlin Wall is the exhibition of the Topography of Terror, which opens daily from 10am to 8pm.
