In the 14th century the castle was probably built by the Archbishop of Cologne, Heinrich III. Built by Virneburg and together with Linn Castle represented a strong fortification of the territory of the Electorate of Cologne in the north.
In 1839 the castle came into private ownership and was rebuilt into the existing late classical form.

It is mentioned for the first time in 1357, in the sources it is also called the castle and the office building. Various outbuildings existed, of which the small tower at the south-east corner of the city fortifications has still been preserved.
In the spring of 1978, V.I.G. Krefeld acquired with the intention of returning the vacant and dilapidated building to residential use. Today the castle is painted yellow.

Here was the castle, the seat of the electoral Cologne bailiff. On the foundation of the old multi-storey keep, the Erlenwein family, closely associated with Uerdingen's history, built the imposing classicist villa in 1839, the front of which still dominates the Rhine side today. The villa and corner tower were converted into a modern residential complex around 1980 - with the preservation of some old vaults.
