The nature reserve stretches from the port of the former Krupp steelworks in the north, over six kilometers in length and a maximum of 700 meters in width, to the Krefeld city limits in the south. In 1991, the city of Duisburg bought the property behind the dike from the Krupp company for 7.5 million DM (approx. 3.8 million euros), supported by the ÖPEL program of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with 3.9 million DM, approx. 2 million euros[1]. In 1992, the area was expanded from 186 to 262 hectares with the city's new landscape plan. Since then, around 51,000 trees and shrubs have been planted, including 450 fruit trees with old orchard varieties. (Source Wikipedia)
