The nature reserve extends from the port of the former Krupp mill in the north over six kilometers in length and a maximum of 700 meters width to the city limits Krefeld in the south. In 1991, the city of Duisburg bought from the Krupp company the property located behind the dike for 7.5 million DM (about 3.8 million Euro), supported by the public land program of North Rhine-Westphalia with 3.9 million DM. about 2 million euros . In 1992, with the city's new landscape plan, the area was extended from 186 to 262 hectares.
