From October 2019 to May 2020, the original 520 × 20 m runway 8/26 was dismantled and a new runway 7/25, 10° swiveled, with a length of 1160 × 18 m was built. The official inauguration took place on September 5, 2020. In addition to the asphalt runway, new glider operating areas were also built, which were only completed much later after delays in the construction process. The new glider runway was approved by the Düsseldorf district government on May 21, 2021 and put into operation for the first time the following day. In the past, glider operations in Aachen-Merzbrück were only possible with the aircraft tow take-off method, but thanks to the conversion and the extended runway, winch starts are now also possible. The FGA (Flugplatzgemeinschaft Aachen e.V.) operates an electric winch together with all the clubs based at the site.
