Benrath Castle is located in the southern district of Benrath in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf.
It was built from 1755 to 1773 under the direction of Nicolas de Pigage (1723-1796) on behalf of the Elector Karl Theodor of the Palatinate as a widow's residence for the Elector Elisabeth Auguste. The cost was 700,000 thalers. The listed ensemble of pleasure palace, hunting park, ponds and canal system is considered to be a major architectural work of art of Dusseldorf.

As the signage indicates that bicycles are rather undesirable at the entrance to the castle park on the banks of the Rhine, this circumvention is appropriate. It leads across meadows and on the edge of the "castle forest" partly overlooking some Benrather mansion to the Orangerie.
