Bike Touring Highlight
Benrath Castle is located in the southern district of Benrath in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf.
It was built from 1755 to 1773 under the direction of Nicolas de Pigage (1723-1796) on behalf of the Elector Karl Theodor of the Palatinate as a widow's residence for the Elector Elisabeth Auguste. The cost was 700,000 thalers. The listed ensemble of pleasure palace, hunting park, ponds and canal system is considered to be a major architectural work of art of Dusseldorf.

The park is not only beautiful, but also ramified. It invites you to take photos and pause. You can find peace in the sun or in the shade or you can look out for romantic corners, old walls and various animals and plants while walking ...
Much too good to cycle through quickly ...

As the signage indicates that bicycles are rather undesirable at the entrance to the castle park on the banks of the Rhine, this circumvention is appropriate. It leads across meadows and on the edge of the "castle forest" partly overlooking some Benrather mansion to the Orangerie.

The pleasure palace in the country. Twelve kilometers from the former gates of the city, Elector Karl Theodor von der Pfalz had Nicolas de Pigage build a maison de plaisance with spacious gardens from 1756 to 1773.
But the elector only visited the property once in his life - today, however, it cannot complain of a lack of visitors. Both Benrath Castle and the 61-hectare park are crowd pullers in the south of Düsseldorf. The gardens are equally popular with lovers of art and nature: the park is home to more than 80 species of birds and over 300 species of beetles. Rare North American trees and shrubs characterize the so-called Elector's Garden, which was created by outstanding gardeners such as Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe and Peter Joseph Lenné in the 19th century.

The mirror pond lies along the main axis of the Benrath Palace Park. It is 470 meters long, almost like a canal. It was created to better illuminate the castle with the sun's rays reflected from the water. Today the mirror pond is one of the distinctive points of the Benrath Castle. Paths run along the pond on both sides and the meadow invites you to sit down and linger.
